Tips to avoid getting infected by a Virus or Spyware

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

1: Install an Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware program. Ensure to keep this up to date and do weekly full scans.

2: Set up your Windows Update to automatically download patches and upgrades. This will allow your computer to automatically download any updates to both the operating system (I.E Windows) and Internet Explorer. These updates fix security holes in both pieces of software.

3: Install and use an alternative web browser such as “Firefox” or “Google chrome” which generally have a less security risk.

Having the above set will help protect your computer but will not guarantee 100% protection. To aid yourself further in reducing the possibility of getting a virus or similar please note the following:

1: Email is a common way of getting infected
Whilst you can safely open an Email, NEVER click on a link within it or open an attachment that you are not positive is from a trusted source.
Here are 2 scenarios:

I. You get an Email from someone you DON’T know. You open it. It tells you (or, persuades you) to click on a link in the Email. You do so. That is when you get infected. Frequently, the Email appears to be from a bank or a company you know. Do not fall for this. Businesses do not normally send unsolicited Email.

II. You get (what appears to be) an Email from someone you do know. Unknown to you, a virus generated that Email (and not your friend). It could be that your friend’s computer is infected, but, not always. Obviously, the actual Email writer doesn’t know you and cannot say anything personal to you, so, typically, it says something like “Click on this link for some important information… “. You are now infected.

If in doubt, delete the Email.

2: Instant messengers. The same caution should be used with opening links and attachments as Emails.

3: Web sites
Visiting Adult, Free game or gambling sites pose a high risk of infection. In addition, do not download software or “Addons” from web sites that you are unfamiliar with. This includes sites such as “Facebbook” and “Myspace”.

4: Do not click on sudden pop-up windows whilst browsing the internet.

5: Do not use disks or usb drives that other people give you.
They could be infected with a virus. Of course, you can run a virus scan on it first, but Anti-Virus programs are not 100% effective.

6: Stay away from file-sharing sites.
Sites that distribute illegal software, music, or movies are known to be riddled with viruses. This includes torrents or other forms of P2P activities (Limewire for example). Staying away from these sites and programs is in your computer’s health’s best interest, as well as a good way to avoid being sued for copyright violation.

The above advice is generally good practice to follow but is not a 100% guarantee that your computer will not get infected again in the future, however, by following these tips you minimise the possibility greatly.

Name brand virus software doesnt always work.

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

There are always computers that we see on site that have Norton, McAfee, Trend and WebRoot Spy Sweeper on them, and they are FULL OF SPYWARE!

I need to say that loudly because it doesn’t really matter what anti-virus program you use, spyware seems to get through them all.

So Lisa, please tell us…what are those programs good for? Well..they are good for a couple of things.

1. Regular virus protection (today’s viruses are spyware)
2. Slowing down your computer.

Period.

Spyware viruses and regular old viruses are not the same these days. Norton (I know this for a fact), will not support certain viruses and you will have to pay “extra” to get those removed. When you’re paying $80+ for the 360 package, you should get everything included. One of my clients had to pay extra for a certain virus removal. Kinda sad.

If you have purchased those products, have had a virus or 20 sneak past them or are finding them to slow down your computer…please Call That Girl for a phone consult and let us help you figure out a better system for protection.

If you are considering buying them, I would not. I remove many of those big box programs because they don’t work and are slower than bisquits drying in a hot sun.

My 2 cents! Enjoy your Wed!

Tip for easy back up of files

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

We have noticed that many of our clients are not backing up their data. I keep going on and on about this, but I can never stress how important it is!

If you are not doing a daily, weekly or monthly back up, here is an easy solution for those extremely important files:

Email them to yourself!

I do this on occasion “just in case” and I do daily back ups!

Troubleshooting your wireless router.

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

How to troubleshoot your wifi/wireless router. Many things can cause your router to go offline. I’m going to guess that you are surfing along and no connection or you come to your computer, there is no connection. You didn’t do anything and it’s not working! Which can be very irritating. But try these simple steps before you spend time calling the internet company or calling a paid technician to help.

* Reboot your computer, see the connection comes back online
* If you are on a laptop, make sure you didn’t turn off your internet switch (usually on the side or in the front)
* If that fails, unplug the power plug on the back of the the router for 10 seconds, plug it back in.
* Check the computer, give it a minute to cycle back online
* If that fails, unplug the router from the wall and plug it back in (no wait time needed).

Try those steps before you jump into your internet connections and start messing with the settings. Some users have gone into their network connections and deleted some very important things, so leave that to the technicians.

Useful Search Engine Optimization Guide

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

While it’s simple  to build a website, but do you know how to make it a search engine friendly website? Search Engine Optimization is an inevitable topic to make a successful website. I will share some tips and tricks that I used for my site, and others that i have worked on which is proven working and very useful.

1. Understand the Way Search Engines Crawl Your Website

“Crawler-based search engines are those that use automated software agents (called crawlers) that visit a Web site, read the information on the actual site, read the site’s meta tags and also follow the links that the site connects to performing indexing on all linked Web sites as well. The crawler returns all that information back to a central depository, where the data is indexed. The crawler will periodically return to the sites to check for any information that has changed. The frequency with which this happens is determined by the administrators of the search engine. “Webopedia

SEO is a long term website maintenance, we need to check the keyword density frequently and the structure of the website to ensure it’s “SEO optimized”. Luckily, there are a lot of tools that will make our life much more easier:

2. Use Search Engine Friendly URL

Do not miss this, it’s very important. URL is one of the ways to include your content keywords. “Even if you can’t get your keywords into your domain name, you can put them into your URLs. Search engines read the URLs and assign value to the text they find there.” – about.com

We can rewrite dynamic URL by using Mod Rewrite. The following websites teach show us how to do it:

Use Google Analytics

I found myself checking Google Analytic Stat daily. I love it because it has all the data I need to analyse web traffic. It has 4 majors section:

  • Visitors
  • Traffic Sources
  • Content
  • Goals

In every section, it has comprehensive statistic, data, drill down report and the level of details are impressive. Afterall, it’s FREE! This tool is highly recommended.

There’s more than the 3 items which is listed above come back soon as I will add more.

WordPress – hyperlink with summary text for post

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I wanted all the post on this blog to have summary’s with a read more link which ended up being simple. After a about 15 mins. or so I  figured it out. Just follow the steps below.

Step 1. Open your admin section of WordPress then go to Appearance .

Step 2. Open the Editor link. Now on the right hand side look for index.php and open that up.

Step 3. Now look for the_content(....); you want to replace the word content for excerpt so it should look like this below.

<?php the_excerpt(); ?>

So now all your post should in a summary. Now all thats left to do is add a link that say’s read more. So by following the same steps above you just need to add this right after the excerpt line. Example of mine below.

<?php the_excerpt(); ?><span><a href=”<?php the_permalink();?>”><?php the_title();?> – Read more</a></span>

Enjoy!

Where Google Stands on the "Keywords" Meta Tag

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Google does not use the “keywords” meta tag in its web search ranking. Google’s Matt Cutts explains this in a Webmaster Central video. This is not breaking news, by any means, but there are a lot of people out there that still put a lot of stock into this.

In fact, Cutts mentions that people have sued each other for meta tag keyword theft, when really this is just a waste of everybody’s time, because they don’t even play a role in the ranking of sites on Google. Have you been under the impression that the keywords meta tag was important to ranking in Google?

“About a decade ago, search engines judged pages only on the content of web pages, not any so-called “off-page” factors such as the links pointing to a web page,” says Cutts. “In those days, keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords. Because the keywords meta tag was so often abused, many years ago Google began disregarding the keywords meta tag.”

Just because Google ignores the “keywords” meta tag, that doesn’t mean it ignores all meta tags. In fact, there are several that the search engine definitely uses. For one, Google sometimes uses the “description” meta tag as the text for search results snippets. But even then, the “description” meta tag isn’t used to influence ranking.

description-meta

Google also recognizes the “google,” “robots,” “verify-v1,” “content type,” and “refresh” meta tags. Information about how Google understands these can be found at this page in the Webmaster Tools help center.

“It’s possible that Google could use this information in the future, but it’s unlikely,” Cutts says of the “keywords” meta tag. “Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently we see no need to change that policy.”

So the moral of the story is, if a competitor is jacking your keywords, and using them in their own “keywords” meta tag, this will have no effect whatsoever in how they rank in Google when compared to your site. Cutts says other search engines might use the information, but Google doesn’t.

Google does note that its enterprise Search Appliance has the ability to match meta tags, but this is of course separate from Google web search.

As I have said before, these videos and other tips Google frequently gives out are worth paying attention to for any webmaster looking to rank well. Whether they’re talking about duplicate content, meta tags, or paid links, they’re all aimed at telling webmasters how it is, and clarifying any misconceptions to the contrary. Whether you agree with Google’s methods in all cases or not, the tips are for your benefit.

Like it or not, Google controls what people find on the web when they search. The company’s huge market share is just something that is. There is always the possibility that could change in the future, but at this point, it looks like webmasters are not going to be able to ignore Google for a long time, if they hope to be found on the web by searchers.

We realize (and Google surely does too) that many well-seasoned marketers already know that Google ignores the “keywords” meta tag, but webmasters are born everyday, and not all of them have been so heavily seasoned to this point, and that’s why Google puts this information out there. There is always misinformation (particularly when it comes to search), and sometimes the record just has to be set straight. Who better to do that than Google itself?

Why you need vulnerability assessment and WiFi security?

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Vulnerability assessment done for an organization’s network gives a report of the security status of the network. While setting up the WiFi connection in the home or in an office PC most people ignore the WiFi Security. But if you don’t secure the network path with some tools probably your neighbors will be able to browse the web using your Wi-Fi connection. If the security levels are not adequate there are hackers who will intrude into your computer system with the intention of destroying the data.

An organization might have a network which is very secured. Yet as an exercise to vulnerability assessment attacks from internal or external network are simulated and these are mapped to certain parameters. Once the security is assessed then a report to detail the security breaches is made. Several solutions and fixes and patches to these vulnerabilities in the network are also suggested. The research and development team normally discover these security vulnerabilities in the network in the company.

This vulnerability assessment of networks is required in companies due to more threats with greater severity and frequency. The assessment helps to strengthen the security of the current network against worms and virus from internal and external sources. There is need to have security solutions that are beyond core level technology to cover the entire network. The needs of the software customers is changing, the access rights, and the permissions required for software are growing, and hence assessing the network for vulnerability is extremely essential. Security compliance is a big matter of concern in the software sections of a company as much as the upgradation of the software.

It is always a rushed job to set up a WiFi connection for a home PC and one tends to ignore WiFi Security. It can take time to install the security features of the WiFi networking product and so you normally end up with a not so secured network.

To connect to WiFi networks you need an access point called a router. To set up a router normally you enter the network address and account information. Now the account information for the routers normally has username and password which can be easily decoded by the hackers. You should change these to something complex and unique to yourself to enhance WiFi Security and should employ the highest measure to save its integrity.

It is advisable to turn on the WPA or WEP encryption with lowest denominator for your WiFi messages over the web to enhance your WiFi Security. Thus the information will travel in a scrambled manner over the World Wide Web.

The default SSID for the access points and routers should also be changed to increase WiFi Security. Connecting to your neighbors open WiFi is not advisable. You might think that a free wireless hotspot is there for you to connect but then you are exposing your computer and hence this is also violation of WiFi Security.

Special software can be installed to get a real time picture of the entire networks security. A picture of conformance to IT security standards and integrity are also obtained with the help of this vulnerability assessment software. To enhance WiFi Security it is required to assign static IP addresses to devices. This can prevent internet hackers from knowing your private IP address range for your company and accessing your computer using the World Wide Web.

Backup your data

Why backups are important

Files can be lost from your computer in any number of ways you might accidentally delete a file, or a virus might wipe one out. You can also have a complete hard drive failure. When a hard drive dies an untimely death, it’s kind of like having your house burn down. Important personal items are usually gone forever—family photos, significant documents, downloaded music, and more.

Thankfully it’s a really simple process these days to back up your content to a second, separate location. By doing so, your files are protected against viruses or complete computer failure. That makes it easy to retrieve and place them on a new hard drive and get going again.

Today, there are many options for backing up your content. You don’t need any sophisticated equipment—you can use CDs, DVDs, external hard drives, flash drives, network drives, or even online services. It really depends on what works best for your lifestyle. The most important thing is to perform backups on a regular basis so that the most current files are always available should you need them.
